Sibot Unleashes his Latest EP, “L”

South African electronic pioneer Sibot presents his latest EP, ‘L’: the second collection of tracks in his V.L.D.T. series and one that showcases the house side of his myriad production styles.

Few South African artists are as enduringly influential as Sibot. Whether as producer, DJ, composer, collaborator or solo artist, this Cape Town-based artist has played a pivotal role in the emergence of electronica as a real force on the national and international scene.

Sibot’s influence dates back to his early projects in the 2000, which saw Sibot collaborate and release with the likes of Waddy Jones (AKA Ninja from Die Antwoord) Spoek Mathambo, Felix Laband, Yolandi Visser and Markus Wormstorm. These releases on the iconic label African Dope carved and created a new sound of South African underground electronic music that paved the way for much of what it is today.

The second EP in the four part series, V.L.D.T, ‘L’ comprises three four-four explorations strongly influenced by, but not confined to, the house and techno rhythms and nuances of the local electronic scene.

The three tracks on show here offer a unique insight into a producer who has remained pretty much uncategorisable throughout his career. Deep, tribal rhythms are accompanied by sharp electro synths; Kenyan chanting is offset with pulsing, shifting bass; subtle melodies give way to epic breakdowns. This is a take on house music rarely heard, and that reveals new intricacies with each replay.
